Passage 1: Guiding Lights
Bài đọc
From hilltop fires to automatic lamps: a short history of the lighthouse
Throughout history, the most dangerous part of a sea voyage has often been its end. In open water a ship has room to manoeuvre; it is near land, among hidden rocks and sandbanks, that the real danger lies. Little wonder, then, that the story of the lighthouse is largely the story of a single problem: how to make a small flame visible across a very large sea.
The earliest aids to navigation were simply fires lit on hilltops and headlands. The most famous lighthouse of the ancient world, however, was a purpose-built tower: the Pharos of Alexandria, completed in the third century BC on an island at the entrance to the city's harbour. Nobody knows exactly how tall it was, but most estimates put it at over 100 metres. Weakened by earthquakes, the tower fell into ruin in the fourteenth century, yet its name lives on: the French word for a lighthouse is phare, while in Italian and Spanish it is faro.
The Romans built lighthouses at harbours throughout their empire, and the remains of one still stand in the grounds of Dover Castle in England. After Roman rule collapsed, however, few new lights were built in Europe for several centuries, and on some coasts the task of keeping a warning fire burning is said to have fallen to local monks. Only when sea trade revived did ports once again begin to invest in permanent towers.
Yet the light itself changed surprisingly little. Until the late eighteenth century, many lighthouses still burned wood or coal in an open iron basket on top of the tower. Such fires were hungry: a single coal-burning light could consume hundreds of tonnes of fuel a year, all of which had to be hauled up the tower. Much of the glow was wasted, escaping upwards or back over the land. Worst of all, in heavy rain or fog the fire could become almost invisible at precisely the moment when sailors most needed to see it. Some towers used candles in glazed lanterns instead, but even two dozen candles gave only a feeble glow.
The first real breakthrough came in the 1780s, when the Swiss scientist Aimé Argand designed an oil lamp with a hollow, circular wick. Because air reached the flame from both inside and outside, and a glass chimney drew it upwards, the lamp burned far more brightly than a candle and gave off very little smoke. Engineers soon placed a curved metal reflector behind each lamp to gather its light into a beam. The results were impressive, but a large light might need twenty or more lamps, and the reflectors had to be polished constantly to stay bright.
The invention that transformed lighthouses came in the early 1820s, when the French physicist Augustin Fresnel designed a lens made up of a central 'bull's-eye' surrounded by rings of glass prisms. Each ring was angled to bend the light from a single lamp towards the horizon, so that much less of it was wasted. One lamp inside such a lens could do the work of many lamps and reflectors, and the lens weighed far less than a solid one of the same size. The first such lens was installed in 1823, and in clear weather the beam from the largest could be seen more than 30 kilometres away. Some countries were slow to adopt the new design, partly because of its cost.
As lights multiplied, sailors needed a way to tell one from another. The answer was to give each light its own 'character'. A lens that turned could make a steady flame appear as a pattern of flashes, two every ten seconds for example, which sailors could check against printed lists. The heaviest lenses, which weighed several tonnes, were eventually floated on a bath of mercury so that they could rotate smoothly, driven by a clockwork mechanism powered by falling weights. Keepers wound the clockwork every few hours, refilled the lamps and cleaned soot from the glass. In the United States, the endless trimming of wicks earned them the nickname 'wickies'.
Lights that could look after themselves took much longer to arrive. A key step came in the early twentieth century, when the Swedish engineer Gustaf Dalén developed a valve that reacted to daylight, shutting off a gas-fuelled light at dawn and turning it on again at dusk. His work on automatic lighting, which won him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1912, allowed remote lights to operate unattended for long periods. As electric lamps and remote monitoring spread, keepers were gradually withdrawn; in Britain, the last of them left in 1998. Today most ships navigate by satellite, yet many lights still shine, often from small LED lamps powered by solar panels. Electronic systems can fail, after all, and a light on a headland remains a simple way for a crew to check their position.
Questions 1–6
Choose TRUE if the statement agrees with the information given in the text, choose FALSE if the statement contradicts the information, or choose NOT GIVEN if there is no information on this.
-
1. Experts agree on the exact height of the Pharos of Alexandria.
Đáp án: FALSE
Câu quyết định: Nobody knows exactly how tall it was (không ai biết chính xác ngọn tháp cao bao nhiêu). Bẫy nằm ở vế sau: most estimates put it at over 100 metres dễ khiến bạn nghĩ giới nghiên cứu đã thống nhất một con số.
Căn cứ: “Nobody knows exactly how tall it was, but most estimates put it at over 100 metres.”
- Experts agree on the exact height ≈ Nobody knows exactly how tall it was
-
2. Words based on the name of the Pharos are still used to mean 'lighthouse' in some languages.
Đáp án: TRUE
Câu quyết định: yet its name lives on: the French word for a lighthouse is phare, while in Italian and Spanish it is faro.
Căn cứ: “Weakened by earthquakes, the tower fell into ruin in the fourteenth century, yet its name lives on: the French word for a lighthouse is phare, while in Italian and Spanish it is faro.”
- Words based on the name of the Pharos are still used ≈ its name lives on
- some languages ≈ French ... Italian and Spanish
-
3. On some coasts, the monks who kept warning fires burning were paid for this work.
Đáp án: NOT GIVEN
- the monks who kept warning fires burning ≈ the task of keeping a warning fire burning ... fallen to local monks
-
4. Lighthouses that burned coal were more expensive to run than those that burned wood.
Đáp án: NOT GIVEN
Bài nhắc cả hai loại nhiên liệu: many lighthouses still burned wood or coal, và cho biết một ngọn đèn đốt than có thể tiêu thụ hundreds of tonnes of fuel a year. Tuy nhiên, bài không so sánh chi phí giữa than và củi, cũng không nói loại nào đắt hơn. Con số 'hàng trăm tấn' dễ khiến bạn nghĩ than tốn kém hơn rồi chọn TRUE, nhưng bài chỉ nói về khối lượng than, không nói gì về lượng củi hay giá cả → NOT GIVEN. Mẹo: câu so sánh (more expensive than…) chỉ là TRUE hoặc FALSE khi bài thật sự so sánh hai đối tượng đó. Từ vựng: consume (v): tiêu thụ; haul (v): kéo, khuân vật nặng.
- Lighthouses that burned coal ≈ a single coal-burning light
-
5. In poor weather, a fire could become almost impossible to see just when sailors depended on it most.
Đáp án: TRUE
Câu quyết định: Worst of all, in heavy rain or fog the fire could become almost invisible at precisely the moment when sailors most needed to see it. Đối chiếu từng phần: poor weather = heavy rain or fog; almost impossible to see = almost invisible; just when sailors depended on it most = at precisely the moment when sailors most needed to see it.
Căn cứ: “Worst of all, in heavy rain or fog the fire could become almost invisible at precisely the moment when sailors most needed to see it.”
- In poor weather ≈ in heavy rain or fog
- almost impossible to see ≈ almost invisible
- just when sailors depended on it most ≈ at precisely the moment when sailors most needed to see it
-
6. The reflectors used with Argand's lamps required little maintenance.
Đáp án: FALSE
Câu quyết định: The results were impressive, but a large light might need twenty or more lamps, and the reflectors had to be polished constantly to stay bright. Gương phản xạ phải được đánh bóng liên tục mới giữ được độ sáng, tức là cần bảo dưỡng thường xuyên, trái ngược với required little maintenance → FALSE. Bẫy: vế đầu The results were impressive (kết quả rất ấn tượng) khiến bạn nghĩ mọi thứ đều thuận lợi, nhưng từ but ngay sau đó dẫn tới nhược điểm. Gương này chính là loại được đặt sau mỗi ngọn đèn Argand (a curved metal reflector behind each lamp). Từ vựng: reflector (n): gương phản xạ; polish (v): đánh bóng; maintenance (n): việc bảo dưỡng.
Căn cứ: “The results were impressive, but a large light might need twenty or more lamps, and the reflectors had to be polished constantly to stay bright.”
- required little maintenance ≈ had to be polished constantly

7.
Đáp án: prisms
Câu chứa đáp án: ...designed a lens made up of a central 'bull's-eye' surrounded by rings of glass prisms. Ghi chú with circles of glass ___ around it diễn đạt lại surrounded by rings of glass prisms (circles = rings; around it = surrounded by).
Căn cứ: “The invention that transformed lighthouses came in the early 1820s, when the French physicist Augustin Fresnel designed a lens made up of a central 'bull's-eye' surrounded by rings of glass prisms.”
- circles ≈ rings
- around it ≈ surrounded by
-
8.
Đáp án: cost
Câu chứa đáp án: Some countries were slow to adopt the new design, partly because of its cost. Ghi chú its high ___, which made some nations hesitate to adopt it: nations = countries, hesitate to adopt ≈ slow to adopt, và partly because of its cost cho biết chi phí là một lý do → cost (chi phí).
Căn cứ: “Some countries were slow to adopt the new design, partly because of its cost.”
- some nations ≈ Some countries
- hesitate to adopt it ≈ were slow to adopt the new design
-
9.
Đáp án: mercury
Câu chứa đáp án: The heaviest lenses, which weighed several tonnes, were eventually floated on a bath of mercury so that they could rotate smoothly. Ghi chú rested on ___ so that they could turn easily: turn easily = rotate smoothly, rested on ≈ floated on a bath of → mercury (thủy ngân).
Căn cứ: “The heaviest lenses, which weighed several tonnes, were eventually floated on a bath of mercury so that they could rotate smoothly”
- rested on ≈ floated on a bath of
- turn easily ≈ rotate smoothly
-
10.
Đáp án: clockwork
Câu chứa đáp án: driven by a clockwork mechanism powered by falling weights. Ghi chú turning power came from a ___ device worked by descending weights: device = mechanism, worked by descending weights = powered by falling weights, turning power came from ≈ driven by → clockwork (bộ máy lên dây cót). Câu kế tiếp Keepers wound the clockwork every few hours xác nhận thêm đáp án. Từ vựng: clockwork (n): bộ máy dây cót; wind (v, quá khứ wound): lên dây cót.
Căn cứ: “driven by a clockwork mechanism powered by falling weights”
- device ≈ mechanism
- worked by descending weights ≈ powered by falling weights
- turning power came from ≈ driven by
-
11.
Đáp án: wicks
Câu chứa đáp án: In the United States, the endless trimming of wicks earned them the nickname 'wickies'. Ghi chú in the USA, their nickname came from the constant need to trim ___: came from ≈ earned them, the constant need to trim ≈ the endless trimming of → wicks (bấc đèn).
Căn cứ: “In the United States, the endless trimming of wicks earned them the nickname 'wickies'.”
- their nickname came from ≈ earned them the nickname
- the constant need to trim wicks ≈ the endless trimming of wicks
-
12.
Đáp án: dusk
Câu chứa đáp án: ...developed a valve that reacted to daylight, shutting off a gas-fuelled light at dawn and turning it on again at dusk. Ghi chú it put gas lights out at sunrise and relit them at ___: put out = shutting off, sunrise = dawn, relit = turning it on again → dusk (lúc chạng vạng).
Căn cứ: “A key step came in the early twentieth century, when the Swedish engineer Gustaf Dalén developed a valve that reacted to daylight, shutting off a gas-fuelled light at dawn and turning it on again at dusk.”
- responded to daylight ≈ reacted to daylight
- put gas lights out at sunrise ≈ shutting off a gas-fuelled light at dawn
- relit them ≈ turning it on again
-
13.
Đáp án: position
Câu chứa đáp án: Electronic systems can fail, after all, and a light on a headland remains a simple way for a crew to check their position. Ghi chú if satellite equipment breaks down, a light helps a crew to confirm the ship's ___: breaks down = fail, confirm = check → position (vị trí).
Căn cứ: “Electronic systems can fail, after all, and a light on a headland remains a simple way for a crew to check their position.”
- satellite equipment breaks down ≈ Electronic systems can fail
- confirm ≈ check
Passage 2: Growing upwards
Bài đọc
Vertical farms promise fresh food from very little land and water – but can they ever pay their way?
A On an industrial estate outside a northern European city stands a windowless warehouse. Inside, lettuce, basil and rocket grow on shelves stacked nine levels high, bathed in a pinkish-purple glow. There is no soil, no sunlight and no rain. Visitors must wear overalls and hairnets and pass through a chamber where jets of air blow dust from their clothes, since a single insect or fungal spore carried in from outside could start an outbreak that would spread through the entire crop. The idea of farming in tall buildings is not new – versions of it appeared in popular magazines over a century ago – but only in the past fifteen years have investors poured billions of dollars into it.
B The principle is simple. Instead of spreading crops across a field, a vertical farm stacks them, so a small plot can hold many times its own area in growing space. Most farms use hydroponics: the plants' roots grow not in soil but in water containing dissolved nutrients. Light comes from LEDs, many of which produce mainly red and blue light, the wavelengths that chlorophyll* absorbs most strongly – hence the unusual glow. Sensors monitor temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide levels, and software adjusts them to suit each crop. In such ideal conditions, growth is rapid: a lettuce that might take two months to mature in a field can be harvested in roughly half that time.
C Supporters point to an impressive list of advantages. Because water is captured and recirculated rather than soaking into the ground or being lost to the air, vertical farms use far less of it than conventional agriculture – up to 95 per cent less, according to some operators. With insects kept out, there is little or no need for pesticides. Crops can be grown all year round, unaffected by the droughts, floods and heatwaves that are becoming more frequent as the climate changes. And because farms can be built in or near cities, salad leaves can reach supermarket shelves within hours of being picked rather than after days on the road, so less of the harvest should go to waste.
D The problem is that sunlight is free; indoor light is not. Even modern LEDs turn only part of their electricity into light – often little more than half – and the rest simply warms the building. Once absorbed by leaves and walls, the light does the same, so almost all the electricity ends up as warmth that air-conditioning must remove, using yet more power. Whether vertical farming benefits the climate therefore depends largely on how that electricity is generated. A farm supplied by coal- or gas-fired power stations may well produce more emissions than a lettuce field hundreds of kilometres away, even once the fuel burnt by the lorries delivering the field's lettuce to the city has been counted. 'The sun is still the cheapest lamp there is,' says Imogen Pryce, a horticultural scientist at a British university, who argues that modern greenhouses offer many of the same benefits for far less energy.
E Energy is not the only expense. Equipping a vertical farm with racks, lighting, pumps and climate-control systems costs far more per square metre than building a greenhouse, and staff are still needed to sow, transplant and harvest thousands of plants a day. These costs explain why vertical farms grow mostly leafy greens and herbs: they are small, mature in weeks rather than months, and almost the whole plant can be sold. Wheat, by contrast, needs months of light to produce a modest amount of grain, and calculations suggest that indoor-grown wheat would cost many times its market price. After energy prices soared in 2022 and investors lost patience with loss-making businesses, several of the sector's best-funded companies shut down or sought protection from their creditors.
F Opinions about the future differ. Sanne Oudkerk, an agricultural economist at a Dutch university, believes the industry harmed its reputation by promising too much. In her view, the survivors will be businesses that stop competing on price and concentrate on delicate, highly perishable produce, such as edible flowers and soft fruit, for which restaurants and shoppers will pay more. Kenta Morimura, a plant physiologist at a Japanese research institute, points out that almost every variety grown in vertical farms today was bred for fields or sunlit greenhouses, where conditions vary far more than in a sealed room. 'We are asking plants bred for the sun to live under lamps,' he says. He believes varieties developed for indoor conditions could raise yields significantly.
G For others, the answer lies in location and energy. Layla Nasser, who studies food security at a university in the Gulf, argues that in countries where fresh water is scarce and most vegetables are imported, the high cost of indoor farming may be worth paying for a supply less vulnerable to distant droughts or blocked shipping routes. Tobias Lindqvist, an energy systems engineer in Sweden, notes that as wind and solar power expand, there are increasingly frequent periods when more electricity is generated than the grid can absorb. Farms that switched their lights on at such times and dimmed them when demand peaked could, he suggests, buy power cheaply while helping to keep supply and demand in balance. Few, however, expect vertical farms to replace fields. More likely, they will take their place alongside greenhouses and conventional farms, supplying a small but valuable share of our fresh food.
Questions 14–18
Reading Passage 2 has seven paragraphs, A–G. Which paragraph contains the following information? Choose the correct letter, A–G. You may choose any letter more than once.
-
14. an explanation for the colour of the light inside vertical farms
Căn cứ: “Light comes from LEDs, many of which produce mainly red and blue light, the wavelengths that chlorophyll* absorbs most strongly – hence the unusual glow.”
- the colour of the light ≈ mainly red and blue light … the unusual glow
- an explanation ≈ the wavelengths that chlorophyll absorbs most strongly – hence
-
15. a reference to the failure of some well-financed businesses
'The failure' ứng với 'shut down or sought protection from their creditors'; 'well-financed businesses' ứng với 'the sector's best-funded companies'. Bẫy 1: đoạn A có 'investors poured billions of dollars into it' – chỉ nói tiền đổ vào ngành, không nói ai thất bại. Bẫy 2: đoạn F có 'the survivors will be businesses that…'
Căn cứ: “After energy prices soared in 2022 and investors lost patience with loss-making businesses, several of the sector's best-funded companies shut down or sought protection from their creditors.”
- the failure ≈ shut down or sought protection from their creditors
- some well-financed businesses ≈ several of the sector's best-funded companies
-
16. details of the precautions taken to keep pests and disease away from crops
Đáp án: A
Căn cứ: “Visitors must wear overalls and hairnets and pass through a chamber where jets of air blow dust from their clothes, since a single insect or fungal spore carried in from outside could start an outbreak that would spread through the entire crop.”
- precautions ≈ wear overalls and hairnets and pass through a chamber where jets of air blow dust from their clothes
- pests and disease ≈ a single insect or fungal spore
-
17. a forecast that vertical farming will coexist with other forms of agriculture
Đáp án: G
Hai câu cuối đoạn G: ít ai nghĩ trang trại thẳng đứng sẽ thay thế đồng ruộng; nhiều khả năng chúng sẽ đứng cạnh nhà kính và trang trại truyền thống (take their place alongside greenhouses and conventional farms). 'A forecast' ứng với 'More likely, they will…'; 'coexist with other forms of agriculture' ứng với 'alongside greenhouses and conventional farms'.
Căn cứ: “Few, however, expect vertical farms to replace fields. More likely, they will take their place alongside greenhouses and conventional farms, supplying a small but valuable share of our fresh food.”
- a forecast ≈ More likely, they will
- coexist with other forms of agriculture ≈ take their place alongside greenhouses and conventional farms
-
18. an example of a crop that it would not be economical to grow indoors
'Not economical to grow indoors' là cách nói lại của 'would cost many times its market price'.
Căn cứ: “Wheat, by contrast, needs months of light to produce a modest amount of grain, and calculations suggest that indoor-grown wheat would cost many times its market price.”
- an example of a crop ≈ Wheat
- not be economical to grow indoors ≈ indoor-grown wheat would cost many times its market price
Questions 19–22
Choose the correct researcher, A–E, for each statement. You may choose any researcher more than once.
List of Researchers: A Imogen Pryce · B Sanne Oudkerk · C Kenta Morimura · D Layla Nasser · E Tobias Lindqvist

19. Places that depend on food from abroad may be justified in accepting the higher cost of growing indoors.
'May be justified in accepting the higher cost' ứng với 'the high cost … may be worth paying'; 'places that depend on food from abroad' ứng với 'countries where … most vegetables are imported'.
Căn cứ: “Layla Nasser, who studies food security at a university in the Gulf, argues that in countries where fresh water is scarce and most vegetables are imported, the high cost of indoor farming may be worth paying for a supply less vulnerable to distant droughts or blocked shipping routes.”
- may be justified in accepting the higher cost of growing indoors ≈ the high cost of indoor farming may be worth paying
- Places that depend on food from abroad ≈ countries where … most vegetables are imported
-
20. Most plants now grown indoors were originally intended for a less stable environment.
'Most plants now grown indoors' ứng với 'almost every variety grown in vertical farms today'; 'originally intended for' ứng với 'was bred for'; 'a less stable environment' ứng với 'fields or sunlit greenhouses, where conditions vary far more than in a sealed room'.
Căn cứ: “Kenta Morimura, a plant physiologist at a Japanese research institute, points out that almost every variety grown in vertical farms today was bred for fields or sunlit greenhouses, where conditions vary far more than in a sealed room.”
- Most plants now grown indoors ≈ almost every variety grown in vertical farms today
- were originally intended for ≈ was bred for
- a less stable environment ≈ fields or sunlit greenhouses, where conditions vary far more than in a sealed room
-
21. Vertical farms could help to stabilise electricity networks.
'Stabilise electricity networks' là cách nói lại 'keep supply and demand in balance' trên 'the grid'.
Căn cứ: “Farms that switched their lights on at such times and dimmed them when demand peaked could, he suggests, buy power cheaply while helping to keep supply and demand in balance.”
- help to stabilise electricity networks ≈ helping to keep supply and demand in balance
- electricity networks ≈ the grid
-
22. Vertical farms are more likely to succeed if they specialise in produce that does not stay fresh for long.
'Produce that does not stay fresh for long' là cách nói lại 'highly perishable produce'; 'more likely to succeed' ứng với 'the survivors will be'; 'specialise in' ứng với 'concentrate on'.
Căn cứ: “In her view, the survivors will be businesses that stop competing on price and concentrate on delicate, highly perishable produce, such as edible flowers and soft fruit, for which restaurants and shoppers will pay more.”
- produce that does not stay fresh for long ≈ highly perishable produce
- are more likely to succeed ≈ the survivors will be
- specialise in ≈ concentrate on
Questions 23–26
Complete the summary using the list of words. Choose the correct answer and move it into the gap.
Counting the costs
Unlike crops in the open air, which receive their light for nothing, plants in a vertical farm depend on lamps that consume large amounts of electricity. Sooner or later, nearly all of this energy is released as (23) ______, which then has to be pumped out of the building, adding further to the power bill. Whether an indoor farm does less damage to the climate than an outdoor one is mainly determined by the (24) ______ of its electricity. In some cases, a vertical farm may cause greater emissions than a distant field, even after (25) ______ has been allowed for. Other costs are also high: fitting out a vertical farm is much more expensive than putting up a greenhouse of the same size, and the business still needs a great deal of (26) ______.
A land · B heat · C price · D transport · E heating · F source · G water · H labour
-
23.
Đáp án: B
Đoạn D viết đèn LED chỉ biến một phần điện thành ánh sáng, phần còn lại làm ấm tòa nhà (simply warms the building); còn ánh sáng, khi đã bị lá và tường hấp thụ, cũng vậy (does the same), nên gần như toàn bộ lượng điện cuối cùng thành hơi ấm (warmth) mà điều hòa phải loại bỏ. Warmth ở đây chính là heat (B). Water (G) là bẫy: cụm 'pumped out of the building' dễ gợi tới nước, nhưng điện năng không thể biến thành nước.
Căn cứ: “Once absorbed by leaves and walls, the light does the same, so almost all the electricity ends up as warmth that air-conditioning must remove, using yet more power.”
- nearly all of this energy ≈ almost all the electricity
- is released as heat ≈ ends up as warmth
- has to be pumped out of the building ≈ air-conditioning must remove
-
24.
Đáp án: F
Đoạn D: trang trại thẳng đứng có lợi cho khí hậu hay không phụ thuộc chủ yếu vào cách sản xuất ra lượng điện đó (depends largely on how that electricity is generated). 'Is mainly determined by' ứng với 'depends largely on'; 'the source of its electricity' là cách nói gọn của 'how that electricity is generated', nên chọn source (F). Price (C) là bẫy mạnh: bản tóm tắt vừa nói tới hóa đơn tiền điện và đoạn E có nhắc giá năng lượng tăng vọt, nhưng giá điện chỉ liên quan đến chi phí; bài không hề nói giá quyết định tác động tới khí hậu. Từ vựng: generate (v): sản xuất (điện); determine (v): quyết định; source (n): nguồn.
Căn cứ: “Whether vertical farming benefits the climate therefore depends largely on how that electricity is generated.”
- whether an indoor farm does less damage to the climate ≈ whether vertical farming benefits the climate
- is mainly determined by ≈ depends largely on
- the source of its electricity ≈ how that electricity is generated
-
25.
Cấu trúc 'even after … has been allowed for' cần một thứ làm tăng khí thải của cánh đồng ở xa, và đó chính là việc chở rau đi xa. Từ vựng: allow for (phr v): tính đến; lorry (n): xe tải (Anh-Anh; Anh-Mỹ là truck); emission (n): khí thải.
Căn cứ: “A farm supplied by coal- or gas-fired power stations may well produce more emissions than a lettuce field hundreds of kilometres away, even once the fuel burnt by the lorries delivering the field's lettuce to the city has been counted.”
- a distant field ≈ a lettuce field hundreds of kilometres away
- transport ≈ the fuel burnt by the lorries delivering the field's lettuce to the city
- even after … has been allowed for ≈ even once … has been counted
-
26.
Căn cứ: “Equipping a vertical farm with racks, lighting, pumps and climate-control systems costs far more per square metre than building a greenhouse, and staff are still needed to sow, transplant and harvest thousands of plants a day.”
- the business still needs a great deal of labour ≈ staff are still needed to sow, transplant and harvest thousands of plants a day
- fitting out a vertical farm is much more expensive than putting up a greenhouse of the same size ≈ Equipping a vertical farm … costs far more per square metre than building a greenhouse
Passage 3: The uses of boredom
Bài đọc
Is the least admired of our emotions also one of the most useful?
Few experiences are as universal, or as little esteemed, as boredom. Yet for most of the twentieth century, psychology had comparatively little to say about it. The discipline's energies went into anger, grief and anxiety, while boredom, when it was noticed at all, seemed too slight and too familiar to repay investigation – less an emotion than a passing inconvenience. That neglect has since ended, but much of the work that replaced it has merely exchanged one presumption for another. Where boredom was once thought too trivial to matter, it is now more often treated as a problem awaiting a solution. Neither attitude, arguably, does justice to what is most interesting about it.
Many early attempts at explanation located the cause in the environment. On this view, the mind resembles an engine that requires a steady supply of fuel; deprived of stimulation, we grow restless, and the remedy is simply to provide more of it. The comparison is not in itself the problem; what such an account struggles to accommodate is how often boredom arises in the midst of plenty: at crowded parties, in front of screens offering hundreds of channels, in jobs that keep people occupied from morning till night. A later and more persuasive account shifts the difficulty from our surroundings to our attention. We become bored, it proposes, when we can neither engage with the activity in front of us nor find anything else we would rather be doing.
Boredom is also widely held to be costly. People who score highly on questionnaires measuring how easily they become bored have been found to make more errors in monotonous work, to eat when they are not hungry and to spend money on impulse. Most of this evidence, however, is correlational: it establishes that the easily bored are more likely to behave in these ways, not that boredom makes them do so. Even the direction of any influence is uncertain – someone who keeps making mistakes may simply come to find the work tedious – and a third factor, poor sleep, say, could conceivably underlie both. To their credit, the researchers themselves seldom claim more than an association; it is in the retelling of their work that correlation quietly hardens into cause.
Evidence of possible benefits is more recent, and thinner. In one experiment, a group of volunteers spent fifteen minutes copying numbers out of a telephone directory, while a second group went straight to the main task: listing as many uses as possible for a pair of plastic cups. Those who had been bored beforehand came up with more uses. In a follow-up, some volunteers copied the numbers while others merely read them, an activity that leaves the mind even freer to wander, and on some kinds of task the readers did better still. The researchers therefore suggested that boredom may aid creativity by encouraging daydreaming.
It is tempting to conclude that boredom makes people more creative, and the idea has been taken up with some enthusiasm by writers on business and education. The conclusion runs well ahead of the evidence. The studies are few and mostly small, their volunteers are often university students, and listing uses for a pair of plastic cups is a long way from composing a symphony. Yet it would be equally mistaken to dismiss the research altogether. Its real interest may lie less in what it reveals about creativity than in what it implies about boredom itself: that it is not an empty state but one that drives the mind to look for something better to do.
A more fruitful question, then, may be what boredom is for. Most emotions appear to exist because they prompt useful action: fear moves us away from danger, and disgust keeps us from eating what might harm us. Boredom seems to belong to the same family. Its function is to signal that what we are doing no longer merits our attention, and to push us towards something that does. The unpleasantness of the experience is therefore not an unfortunate side effect but the whole point, since a signal that caused little discomfort would be all too easy to ignore.
If this is right, the real danger lies not in the feeling but in how we respond to it. A signal can be heeded or silenced, and many of us now silence this one by reaching for a smartphone at the first flicker of restlessness. Whether the habit leaves us bored more often or less often is still disputed; the real difficulty is that the discomfort vanishes before it has had time to do its work. Some commentators have drawn the lesson that parents should deliberately build periods of boredom into their children's days, but this rather misses the point. Boredom is of use only to those who are free to act on it, and idleness imposed from outside is more likely to teach resentment than resourcefulness.
The case made here concerns only ordinary, passing boredom, which we are free to act on. It does not extend to boredom that cannot be escaped, such as that of someone doing highly repetitive work with no prospect of change. There, a signal that cannot be acted on offers nothing but discomfort, and the proper response is to alter the circumstances rather than to praise the endurance of those who must put up with them. For everyone else, the more useful question when boredom arrives is not how to make it go away, but what it is trying to say.
Questions 27–31
Choose the correct answer.
-
27. According to the writer, why did psychologists pay little attention to boredom for most of the twentieth century?
- A They considered it a symptom of other conditions rather than a state worth studying in its own right.
- B They doubted that so vague a state could be measured reliably.
- C They saw it as a temporary annoyance rather than a genuine emotion.
- D They regarded it as a practical problem for employers rather than a scientific question.
Đáp án: C
Đoạn 1: suốt phần lớn thế kỷ 20, tâm lý học dồn sức cho giận dữ, đau buồn và lo âu, còn buồn chán có vẻ quá nhỏ nhặt, quá quen thuộc để đáng công nghiên cứu, giống một phiền toái thoáng qua hơn là một cảm xúc (less an emotion than a passing inconvenience). (C) diễn đạt lại đúng ý: temporary annoyance = passing inconvenience, rather than a genuine emotion = less an emotion than.
Căn cứ: “boredom, when it was noticed at all, seemed too slight and too familiar to repay investigation – less an emotion than a passing inconvenience”
- a temporary annoyance ≈ a passing inconvenience
- rather than a genuine emotion ≈ less an emotion than
- pay little attention to boredom ≈ had remarkably little to say about it
-
28. What is the writer's main criticism of the older theory of boredom?
- A It depended on a misleading comparison between the mind and a machine.
- B It could not explain why some people need far more stimulation than others.
- C It was based on laboratory studies that bore little resemblance to everyday life.
- D It did not fit the situations in which people often experience boredom.
Người viết nói rõ phép so sánh ấy tự nó không phải là vấn đề (The comparison is not in itself the problem); điều thuyết này khó giải thích được là buồn chán lại hay xuất hiện ngay giữa sự dư thừa (in the midst of plenty), như ở tiệc đông người hay trong công việc bận rộn cả ngày.
Căn cứ: “The comparison is not in itself the problem; what such an account struggles to accommodate is how often boredom arises in the midst of plenty: at crowded parties, in front of screens offering hundreds of channels, in jobs that keep people occupied from morning till night.”
- main criticism ≈ what such an account struggles to accommodate
- did not fit ≈ struggles to accommodate
- the situations in which people often experience boredom ≈ how often boredom arises in the midst of plenty
-
29. What does the writer say about the second group of volunteers in the original experiment?
- A They spent an equal period on an activity meant to be absorbing.
- B They began the creative task without any preliminary activity.
- C They were allowed longer than the first group to complete the main task.
- D They were asked to find uses for a different everyday object.
Đáp án: B
Đoạn 4: nhóm thứ nhất dành mười lăm phút chép số từ danh bạ điện thoại, một việc cố tình nhàm chán, còn nhóm thứ hai làm ngay nhiệm vụ chính (went straight to the main task): nghĩ ra càng nhiều công dụng càng tốt cho một cặp cốc nhựa. Vậy (B) đúng: began the creative task without any preliminary activity = went straight to the main task.
Căn cứ: “In one experiment, a group of volunteers spent fifteen minutes copying numbers out of a telephone directory, while a second group went straight to the main task: listing as many uses as possible for a pair of plastic cups.”
- began the creative task without any preliminary activity ≈ went straight to the main task
-
30. What did the follow-up study suggest?
- A The more concentration a dull activity required, the stronger its effect.
- B A dull activity that gave people's thoughts more room to drift could have a greater effect on some tasks.
- C The type of dull activity made little difference to the effect.
- D Dull activities had a stronger effect when they went on for longer.
Đáp án: B
Đoạn 4: trong nghiên cứu tiếp theo, một số người chép số, số khác chỉ đọc số (merely read them), một hoạt động để tâm trí còn tự do lang thang hơn, và ở một số loại nhiệm vụ, nhóm chỉ đọc còn làm tốt hơn nữa (on some kinds of task the readers did better still). (B) diễn đạt lại đúng và giữ đúng mức dè dặt: gave people's thoughts more room to drift = leaves the mind even freer to wander; on some tasks = on some kinds of task. Từ vựng: wander (v): (tâm trí) lang thang; drift (v): (suy nghĩ) trôi miên man; merely (adv): chỉ, đơn thuần.
Căn cứ: “In a follow-up, some volunteers copied the numbers while others merely read them, an activity that leaves the mind even freer to wander, and on some kinds of task the readers did better still.”
- gave people's thoughts more room to drift ≈ leaves the mind even freer to wander
- could have a greater effect on some tasks ≈ on some kinds of task the readers did better still
-
31. What is the writer's main purpose in the fifth paragraph?
- A to acknowledge the limitations of the research while defending the view that boredom makes people more creative
- B to argue that, despite its limitations, the research reveals more about creativity than about boredom
- C to explain why the research appealed to writers on business and education and to suggest how it could be improved
- D to challenge an optimistic reading of the research and propose a different view of its significance
Từ vựng: run ahead of: vượt quá; dismiss (v): gạt bỏ.
Căn cứ: “The conclusion runs well ahead of the evidence. The studies are few and mostly small, their volunteers are often university students, and listing uses for a pair of plastic cups is a long way from composing a symphony. Yet it would be equally mistaken to dismiss the research altogether. Its real interest may lie less in what it reveals about creativity than in what it implies about boredom itself”
- an optimistic reading of the research ≈ It is tempting to conclude that boredom makes people more creative
- challenge ≈ The conclusion runs well ahead of the evidence
- a different view of its significance ≈ Its real interest may lie less in what it reveals about creativity than in what it implies about boredom itself
Questions 32–36
Do the following statements agree with the views of the writer? Choose YES if the statement agrees with the views of the writer, choose NO if the statement contradicts the views of the writer, or choose NOT GIVEN if it is impossible to say what the writer thinks about this.
-
32. Much recent research on boredom rests on an assumption that is no more satisfactory than the one it replaced.
Từ vựng: presumption (n): giả định, định kiến; do justice to: đánh giá đúng giá trị của.
Căn cứ: “That neglect has since ended, but much of the work that replaced it has merely exchanged one presumption for another.”
- an assumption ≈ presumption
- no more satisfactory than the one it replaced ≈ merely exchanged one presumption for another ... Neither attitude, arguably, does justice
-
33. People who are easily bored tend to sleep less than others.
Đáp án: NOT GIVEN
- tend to sleep less than others ≈ a third factor, poor sleep, say, could conceivably underlie both (chỉ là giả định)
-
34. Researchers who have looked for links between boredom and everyday behaviour have tended to overstate what their findings show.
Đáp án: NO
Từ vựng: overstate (v): nói quá, phóng đại; association (n): mối liên hệ; to their credit: phải công nhận là (lời khen).
Căn cứ: “To their credit, the researchers themselves seldom claim more than an association; it is in the retelling of their work that correlation quietly hardens into cause.”
- Researchers who have looked for links between boredom and everyday behaviour ≈ the researchers themselves
- have tended to overstate what their findings show ≈ seldom claim more than an association
-
35. Boredom serves the same general purpose as emotions such as fear.
Bẫy: tưởng bài không so sánh buồn chán với sợ hãi nên chọn NOT GIVEN; thực ra cụm the same family chính là phép so sánh ấy, còn seems chỉ làm lời khẳng định mềm đi. Từ vựng: prompt (v): thúc đẩy; disgust (n): sự ghê sợ; merit (v): xứng đáng được.
Căn cứ: “Most emotions appear to exist because they prompt useful action: fear moves us away from danger, and disgust keeps us from eating what might harm us. Boredom seems to belong to the same family.”
- serves the same general purpose as emotions such as fear ≈ Boredom seems to belong to the same family
- purpose ≈ exist because they prompt useful action
-
36. Boredom would do its job better if it were less unpleasant.
Đáp án: NO
Bẫy: nhận định nghe hợp lẽ thường (cảm giác càng dễ chịu càng tốt), dễ chọn YES nếu bỏ qua mệnh đề since ở cuối câu. Từ vựng: unpleasantness (n): sự khó chịu; side effect (n): tác dụng phụ; ignore (v): phớt lờ.
Căn cứ: “The unpleasantness of the experience is therefore not an unfortunate side effect but the whole point, since a signal that caused little discomfort would be all too easy to ignore.”
- less unpleasant ≈ a signal that caused little discomfort
- would do its job better ≈ would be all too easy to ignore (ngược lại)
Questions 37–40
Complete each sentence with the correct ending. Choose the correct answer and move it into the gap.
A tend to cut the feeling short before it can be of any use. · B are more likely than others to make mistakes in routine work. · C become bored more easily as a result. · D are more likely to feel aggrieved than to learn to occupy themselves. · E tend to come up with more original ideas than other people. · F deserve better working conditions rather than admiration for their patience. · G are bored less often as a result.
-
37. People who are especially prone to boredom
Đáp án: B
Đoạn 3: người đạt điểm cao trong bảng hỏi đo mức độ dễ chán được thấy là mắc nhiều lỗi hơn trong công việc đơn điệu (have been found to make more errors in monotonous work), và bài xác nhận họ có khả năng hành xử như vậy cao hơn (more likely to behave in these ways). Vậy (B) đúng: mistakes = errors, routine work = monotonous work.
Căn cứ: “People who score highly on questionnaires measuring how easily they become bored have been found to make more errors in monotonous work, to eat when they are not hungry and to spend money on impulse.”
- People who are especially prone to boredom ≈ People who score highly on questionnaires measuring how easily they become bored
- are more likely than others to make mistakes ≈ have been found to make more errors
- routine work ≈ monotonous work
-
38. People who reach for a smartphone at the first hint of restlessness
Đáp án: A
Đoạn 7: nhiều người tắt tín hiệu buồn chán bằng cách với lấy điện thoại ngay khi vừa thấy bồn chồn (silence this one by reaching for a smartphone at the first flicker of restlessness). Người viết nói chưa rõ thói quen này làm ta chán nhiều hơn hay ít hơn; vấn đề thật là cảm giác khó chịu biến mất trước khi kịp làm nhiệm vụ của nó (the discomfort vanishes before it has had time to do its work). Vậy (A) đúng: cut the feeling short = silence the signal; before it can be of any use = before it has had time to do its work.
Căn cứ: “many of us now silence this one by reaching for a smartphone at the first flicker of restlessness. Whether the habit leaves us bored more often or less often is still disputed; the real difficulty is that the discomfort vanishes before it has had time to do its work.”
- People who reach for a smartphone at the first hint of restlessness ≈ many of us now silence this one by reaching for a smartphone at the first flicker of restlessness
- cut the feeling short before it can be of any use ≈ the discomfort vanishes before it has had time to do its work
-
39. Children whose parents deliberately schedule periods of boredom for them
Vậy (D) đúng: feel aggrieved = resentment (bất bình, oán giận), learn to occupy themselves = resourcefulness (biết tự tìm việc để làm); cần nối lịch buồn chán cha mẹ sắp đặt với idleness imposed from outside.
Căn cứ: “Some commentators have drawn the lesson that parents should deliberately build periods of boredom into their children's days, but this rather misses the point. Boredom is of use only to those who are free to act on it, and idleness imposed from outside is more likely to teach resentment than resourcefulness.”
- Children whose parents deliberately schedule periods of boredom for them ≈ parents should deliberately build periods of boredom into their children's days
- periods of boredom scheduled by parents ≈ idleness imposed from outside
- are more likely to feel aggrieved than to learn to occupy themselves ≈ is more likely to teach resentment than resourcefulness
-
40. People whose work is highly repetitive and offers no hope of change
(F) diễn đạt lại: better working conditions = alter the circumstances, admiration for their patience = praise the endurance.
Căn cứ: “It does not extend to boredom that cannot be escaped, such as that of someone doing highly repetitive work with no prospect of change. There, a signal that cannot be acted on offers nothing but discomfort, and the proper response is to alter the circumstances rather than to praise the endurance of those who must put up with them.”
- People whose work is highly repetitive and offers no hope of change ≈ someone doing highly repetitive work with no prospect of change
- deserve better working conditions ≈ the proper response is to alter the circumstances
- rather than admiration for their patience ≈ rather than to praise the endurance of those who must put up with them
